Learn more about hard anodizing

Hard anodizing is an effective treatment that is used when there are special requirements for the aluminum's corrosion resistance.

Further information

Hard anodizing is a special variant of anodizing that meets industrial requirements in terms of wear resistance, density, hardness, friction, electric breakdown field strength and corrosion resistance.
In addition to industrial standard treatments, we offer specific types of hard anodizing, where you can choose between our 3 types: Type 2000, Type 6000 and Type 7000.

With hard anodizing, aluminum is treated in one of our special process vessels with the aim of building an oxide layer which protects aluminum against corrosion, mechanical impact and the penetration of foreign elements.
With hard anodizing, depending on the alloy and hardness, you will get a light brown to dark gray colour, which can be dyed black. Standard hard anodizing will, in contrast to traditional anodizing, give a rougher surface.

Hard anodizing is a special variant of anodizing, and with HAI we have control over our hard anodizing processes. HAI has the equipment to provide the right hardness. µm is not just µm. We have hardness tests done at regular intervals, so that we always make sure, and we can document that we are market leaders. Depending on the alloy and the process, 50 µm hard anodizing can produce a hardness of 300-500 HV (Vickers hardness). Hard anodizing is used, among other things, for cylinders, gears, bearings, piston rods and clutch discs, and the impression of metal is preserved.

Type 2000, µm 30-100 is the treatment to choose if you want Mill III standards to be met.

There are high requirements for this treatment, and we therefore need to know the full surface of the subject precisely in order to fulfill the process. Type 2000 can be used for all alloys, and is particularly good for copper alloys, as this treatment dissolves copper faster. As it is a process that takes time, it gives a rougher surface and it is not possible to dye in colors other than black.

HAI® type 2000

Type 7000, µm 30-200 can anodize all alloys and gives a smoother look. Type 7000 is therefore recommended for more architectural subjects. This treatment is also good for offshore, as it can create a thick µm layer. A special ability of this treatment is that you get a hard surface. that do not require sealing.

Most suitable alloys

Type 6000, µm 30 -75 is the treatment to choose if you want to color your items, but only an organic color, as hard anodizing gives a greyish look. Type 6000 is extra good for hard anodizing 6000 alloy, but can also be used for other alloys. This process does not require us to know surface area. Type 6000 treatment is only offered by HAI.

Blowing is an effective mechanical pre-treatment that is used when there are special requirements for the aluminum's structure or hardness. Blasting leaves a nice, uniform and matte surface at the same time, the treatment can to a certain extent remedy machining surfaces, grinding marks, tensile and heat streaks, which are visible on the raw material. This is due to changes in the material structure, which achieves the more uniform surface and with a matte appearance before further processing.

HAI offers several different blowing media with different roughness in the structure to give the uniform surface a broken structure.

We have different variants of blowing agents, where depending on the desired result, you can choose between; glass beads, precious corundum, stainless steel balls, stainless steel grit and mixed blasting agent.

We have a blowing agent that suits your needs regardless of the application or the physical characteristics of the component.

The treatment takes place in a closed cabin, where our operators blow fine grains of glass against the aluminum blanks. This achieves a uniform surface and a nice finish on the entire item.

Blowing is a pre-treatment process that can be equated with other mechanical pre-treatments such as grinding, brushing and polishing.

HAI can blow glass profiles up to 8 meters in a continuous plant and offers economically advantageous glass blowing in fully automatic plants.
