Learn more about chemical pickling

Pickling is an effective treatment that is used when there are special requirements for the aluminum's corrosion resistance. Pickling is one of the most widely used chemical pretreatment processes, which is based on a strong basic chemistry.

Further information

Pickling is used where a strong cleaning of the surface is desired, as well as where a matt expression is desired, as this cleaning reacts differently on a surface and therefore breaks a glossy surface.

Chemical pickling is an effective pre-treatment method, where during the process the surface is etched and small irregularities on the aluminum are minimized. Once the etching has removed the oxide layer, it will continue into the raw aluminum and produce a matte and uniform surface structure. Larger scratches and marks will still appear without any noticeable change after the treatment. A guideline is that pickling can remove scratches that cannot be felt with a fingernail.

If a matte look is desired, the staining time can be adjusted as needed.

The pickling process takes place in one of our many alkaline baths, where you enter via a chemical mixture and etch/remove the natural oxide layer. Pickling therefore also allows aluminum to be anodized.
As mordant is strongly alkaline and corrodes the surface, this means that a part is reduced in size in practice. This can be used to compensate for the thickness of the oxide layer. In this way, we can deliver items that are largely unchanged in their dimensions.

As stain does not repair noticeable scratches, it is therefore important that the product is delivered in a similar or higher standard of surface than that desired as the final product.

By safe, effective and gentle pickling of the aluminum product in our alkaline baths, the natural oxide layer is removed before the subsequent anodization.

Technical specification

E6 Chemical stain Etches the surface with the aim of creating homogeneous and matte surfaces. Surface defects will be blurred or eliminated. The treatment is used to a limited extent on extruded profiles
E8 Grinding or polishing followed by chemical polishing The process leaves a shiny and smooth surface, with the visible effect of previous grinding or polishing.

Clariant

In recent years, aluminum has become a widely used material in everyday life. Both for interior architecture and for more decorative purposes.

The colors go through a constant quality control, which ensures uniform coloring and high quality. However, we would like to point out that color differences may occur depending on whether it is a matter of coloring cast items, plates and profiles.

Indoor coloring

Today, anodized aluminum is used more and more often for architectural purposes. Buildings are more often constructed in aluminium, which is perfect for this purpose. For example, the buildings' facades are naturally anodised or colored aluminium, as the metal is light, requires minimal maintenance and fits into most environments.

Blowing is an effective mechanical pre-treatment that is used when there are special requirements for the aluminum's structure or hardness. Blasting leaves a nice, uniform and matte surface at the same time, the treatment can to a certain extent remedy machining surfaces, grinding marks, tensile and heat streaks, which are visible on the raw material. This is due to changes in the material structure, which achieves the more uniform surface and with a matte appearance before further processing.

HAI offers several different blowing media with different roughness in the structure to give the uniform surface a broken structure.

We have different variants of blowing agents, where depending on the desired result, you can choose between; glass beads, precious corundum, stainless steel balls, stainless steel grit and mixed blasting agent.

We have a blowing agent that suits your needs regardless of the application or the physical characteristics of the component.

The treatment takes place in a closed cabin, where our operators blow fine grains of glass against the aluminum blanks. This achieves a uniform surface and a nice finish on the entire item.

Blowing is a pre-treatment process that can be equated with other mechanical pre-treatments such as grinding, brushing and polishing.

HAI can blow glass profiles up to 8 meters in a continuous plant and offers economically advantageous glass blowing in fully automatic plants.
