Ball burnishing
Blanks are burnished in a batch process where the blanks are mechanically burnished using stainless steel balls or satellites with the addition of compound powder or grinding paste.
Advantages/Disadvantages:
- Does not debur
- Economically advantageous for large batch sizes
- Dimensional limitations
Application:
- Cast components
- Punched components
- Laser cut components
- Mechanical components
Effect on scratches and minor flaws in the surface:
- Gives smooth surfaces
- Masks/removes minor surface defects
Structure and appearance after treatment:
- Diffuse, flat surface
Suitable alloys:
- All of the alloys of aluminium
- Stainless steel alloys
- Brass alloys
