Corrosion and Abraser Test

SALT SPRAY CORROSION TEST
The HAI laboratory has a new Ascott S 450 salt sprayer, which is one of the most modern to test for corrosion in blanks.

Internally HAI uses the salt sprayer to test the various surface treatments for aluminium sheets. This is partly in order to satisfy the applicable MIL standards relating to anodisation and chromating.

Applicability:
The salt spray test is the most widely-used method to test corrosion resistance.

The test is performed in a closed chamber where the blanks are exposed to a continuous saline spray.

The salt spray test can help to define which materials are most applicable in aggressive environments. It can also be used to assess where different suitable surface treatments are in corrosive environments.

Function:
The salt spray works by placing test blanks in the salt spray chamber. The length of time that the blanks should be exposed to the salt spray is then defined. The machine is fitted with an atomiser that delivers the blanks with a continual spray during the entirety of the test period.

Sheets with different surface layers are most frequently tested, but it is also possible to test blanks with a different design in consultation with HAI.

ABRASION TEST
In connection with internal inspections and tests HAI has a “Taber Abraser”. HAI can therefore offer to conduct a Taber Abraser Test in accordance with military specifications

Standards

There are a number of standards relating to corrosion tests and salt spray tests.

HAI’s salt sprayer operates in accordance with the ASTM 117 standard, which is a neutral salt spray test (NSS). In order to comply with the standard HAI’s salt spray test is inspected several times every day by our laboratory.

ASTM 117 is comparable with ISO 7253 and the DIN 50 021 standard. There are a number of standards in this area, so please contact the HAI quality department on tel. +45 75 62 22 88.
